Make a Clothes Peg Biplane

At the start of World War One aviation was still in its infancy. Britain had two armed services with planes: The Royal Flying Corps and The Royal Naval Air Service. These did not merge into The Royal Air Force until April 1918.

The planes that they flew were called biplanes, the most famous of which was the ‘Sopwith Camel’. ‘Biplane’ means an aircraft having two wings, one above the other. Two wings gave the aircraft greater lift in the air. Some German planes had three wings and were called ‘Triplanes’. Later, when better engines were developed, the extra wings became unnecessary and planes like the famous ‘Spitfire’ had only one.

What you need to do

You will need a clothes peg of the type illustrated, scissors and glue. If you plan to colour the model, you will also need paint, crayons or coloured pens.

The plan shows the three copies of the required pieces of the model that you will get if you click the PRINT button.

You can alter the colours on the printout by clicking on the top, middle or bottom planes shown. The colours available are grey, red, yellow, blue and white (which you can use if you want to colour the plane yourself).

We recommend that you print onto card rather than office paper. Cut around the outline of each piece then fold along the dotted lines.
