OUR WORLD WAR TWO ROLL OF HONOUR IS UPDATED AND LIVE
We are pleased to announce that we have finished updating our World War 2 Roll of Honour, with much new information added. Loughborough Roll of Honour – WW2
Using contemporary newspaper reports, service records, family, regimental and local history websites and online information, it’s been possible to fill in a great deal more detail about the lives and deaths of the men (and one woman, Irene Guy) with Loughborough connections, who gave their lives in the 1939-1945 war.
All services are represented, with as you might expect, far more RAF personnel than for World War 1. In addition, the Roll of Honour includes Army, Royal Navy, and Home Guard members. Many were very young when they died, and some had the misfortune to die as prisoners of war. And, while most were killed in action, a large number succumbed to illness and accidents, particularly flying accidents. They all ‘did their bit’ and served all over the world. They are all commemorated on bronze plaques on the exterior of the Loughborough Carillon.
On the Roll of Honour you will see a number of names with no details attached. Without a service number, date of birth or death, it’s very difficult to trace people. But if you see a name which you think may have a connection to someone in your past, please let us know. Any additional information about any of the biographies will be very welcome too.
Vinod Soni, who served in the Territorials with our Chairman Mel Gould for many years, has been an invaluable help in getting the Roll of Honour updated and online.
